Relay for Life Isle of Man 2014 has raised £85,380.93, a record sum for Cancer Research UK, the Isle of Man-registered charity funding life-saving treatment for cancer patients.
Sponsored by Celton Manx for the fourth consecutive year and held on August 23rd, Relay for Life Isle of Man was the culmination of a year-long fundraising campaign.
Event chairman Nicola Walkingshaw said: ‘This year exceeded all our expectations. We’ve smashed our target for the second year running, thanks to the tremendous support from our sponsor Celton Manx, the 50 teams who took part and the overwhelming generosity of the people of the Isle of Man who got behind the event with such enthusiasm.
‘Relay for Life Isle of Man is now in its fifth year and has grown to attract more than 700 people, including 60 cancer survivors. It’s a true community event with teams made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life – from corporate bodies to volunteer organisations, groups of friends to individuals – all united in their commitment to celebrate life, remember those lost to cancer and raise funds to beat cancer sooner.’
Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said: ‘To be lead sponsor for Relay for Life Isle of Man is to be part of something very special; a community event that clearly captures people’s hearts and minds and helps raise vital funds to advance cancer research. Celton Manx has been pleased to be involved once again with the relay, which is so professionally organised by Nicola and her team. I congratulate everyone who took part and helped achieve this outstanding sum.’
Nicola added: ‘Now is the time for celebration, given that in the five years of Relay for Life Isle of Man we’ve raised £250,000. But it’s also time to reflect on the work that has yet to be done to conquer a disease which in some way or other touches all our lives. With this in mind we are now launching our Relay for Life Isle of Man 2015 campaign, so watch this space.’
